Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand

Known as the Symphony of a Thousand, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony is one of the most ambitious choral-orchestral symphonies in classical music history, seamlessly weaving together vocal and instrumental sonorities. Led by Osmo Vänskä as the capstone to his 19-year tenure as music director, the Minnesota Orchestra’s performances of the symphony are among the largest-scale performances ever presented at Orchestra Hall, involving more than 300 artists onstage, including four choirs and seven vocal soloists.

BIS Records recorded the work live in concert and over a series of recording sessions in June 2022 at Orchestra Hall to create this stunning Super Audio CD.

Vänskä must have invested a great deal of energy…to avoid monumentality and yet to give the work its full dramatic power in order to produce such a transparent, contoured sound with this many musicians.
