A Few Things to Know

  • A native of Sahalahti, Finland, Kari Sundström joined the Minnesota Orchestra’s trombone section in 1996 after having been a member of the Helsinki Philharmonic. He dedicated his Chromatic Fantasy to Anthony Ross, the Orchestra’s principal cello, and describes the piece as “my take on what I would have envisioned if Shostakovich had written a solo cello work.”
  • “Nielsen has a quality of being, as we say in Finnish, oikukas, capricious, changing in unpredictable ways,” says Minnesota Orchestra Conductor Laureate Osmo Vänskä. Vänskä adds that Serenata in Vano is about romantic efforts that remain unsuccessful—“maybe symbolic of Nielsen’s trying to build bridges with his wife—Anne Marie Brodersen, a fine, very strong-willed sculptor—because year after year she would leave him with their children for long periods to go off and focus on her work.”
