A Few Things to Know

• Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale is one of his most theatrical scores, comprising a complete amalgamation of musical characters and styles including tango, waltz, jazz, ragtime and even a Dies Irae

• English composer York Bowen was an accomplished violist, horn player and pianist. He was the first pianist to record Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. His name is unfamiliar to many music lovers because, despite a large quantity of completed works, much of his music has never been published or recorded. 
• Dumky, the plural version of dumka, comes from the Ukrainian word meaning “thought” or “thoughtful and melancholy character.” Dvořák helped to develop a musical genre in connection with this word, emphasizing significant mood changes over the course of each composition.
