Shostakovich Symphony No. 12

Fri Oct 18 — Sat Oct 19, 2024

Orchestra Hall

~2 hours, including intermission

Words are a powerful influence in this program with Zhou Tian looking to Chinese poetry for inspiration and the well-read Leonard Bernstein to W. H. Auden. In his Symphony No. 12, Dmitri Shostakovich captures the spirit of a revolution. A reminder: when it comes to Shostakovich, the Minnesota Orchestra leaves nothing in the tank.

A Few Things to Know

  1. When Leonard Bernstein first read The Age of Anxiety by English poet W.H. Auden, he connected so deeply with Auden’s text that he knew he would create a musical response to it. In this Symphony No. 2, the piano solo represents Bernstein’s self and his complex exploration of faith.
  2. Grammy-nominated Chinese American composer and Composer Institute alumnus Zhou Tian describes his piece, Gift, as a “reminder of the joy of music making” and a “gift to his fellow musicians.”
  3. During the COVID-19 pandemic, pianist Yuliana Avdeeva created #AvdeevaBachProject, an incredibly popular online piano education series.
