Shostakovich Symphony No. 12
Fri Oct 18 — Sat Oct 19, 2024
Orchestra Hall
Words are a powerful influence in this program with Zhou Tian looking to Chinese poetry for inspiration and the well-read Leonard Bernstein to W. H. Auden. In his Symphony No. 12, Dmitri Shostakovich captures the spirit of a revolution. A reminder: when it comes to Shostakovich, the Minnesota Orchestra leaves nothing in the tank.
A Few Things to Know
- When Leonard Bernstein first read The Age of Anxiety by English poet W.H. Auden, he connected so deeply with Auden’s text that he knew he would create a musical response to it. In this Symphony No. 2, the piano solo represents Bernstein’s self and his complex exploration of faith.
- Grammy-nominated Chinese American composer and Composer Institute alumnus Zhou Tian describes his piece, Gift, as a “reminder of the joy of music making” and a “gift to his fellow musicians.”
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, pianist Yuliana Avdeeva created #AvdeevaBachProject, an incredibly popular online piano education series.

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård begins his second season as music director.
Mexican-American conductor Robert Treviño has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting maestros of the younger generation performing today. He serves as the music director of the Basque National Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI.
A pianist of fiery temperament and virtuosity, Yulianna Avdeeva plays with power, conviction and sensibility, having won over audiences around the world. “Her pacing is born of intelligent feeling and clarity of thought, and her ability to finesse Chopin’s inner voices puts many to shame” (The Guardian).
