Park, Ortiz and Prokofiev
Fri Feb 14 — Sat Feb 15, 2025
Orchestra Hall
Whipping winds, bombastic percussion and shimmering strings—this captivating program is pulsing with new energy and features two pieces performed by the Minnesota Orchestra for the first time. First, Chilean-born conductor Paolo Bortolameolli introduces audiences to Miguel Farías’ evocative Retratos Australes. Then our own First Associate Concertmaster Susie Park performs Gabriela Ortiz’s blazing violin concerto. Finally, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3 is sometimes nicknamed “The Fiery Angel,” and you’ll hear why in the work’s intensity, from the opening chords to its haunted ending.
A Few Things to Know
- In addition to his award-winning conducting, Paolo Bortolameolli is a published author, founder and artistic director of an educational residency called Sinfónica Azteca, and a 2018 TED Talk guest lecturer.
- Gabriela Ortiz has composed seven works with the word “altar” in the title, each honoring something in a symbolic, conceptual way, and not necessarily with any religious affiliation. Altar de Cuerda translates to “String Altar” and is dedicated to rising-star Spanish violinist María Dueñas.

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his second season as music director.
Chilean-Italian conductor Paolo Bortolameolli is a prolific force on the podium, a talented lecturer and an advocate for the arts. He serves as music director of the Ópera Nacional de Chile and Filarmónica de Santiago, as well as music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Juvenil in Chile.
Australian-born Susie Park, the Minnesota Orchestra’s first associate concertmaster since 2015, will be featured as soloist with the ensemble in June 2023 in Brahms’ Double Concerto with Associate Principal Cello Silver Ainomäe. She has performed solos with numerous major orchestras in Europe, the U.S. and Australia, as well as Korea’s KBS Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington in New Zealand. She was the violinist of the Eroica Trio from 2006 to 2012, with which she recorded the ensemble’s Grammy-nominated CD of all-American repertoire, and toured internationally. Her interest in music of all genres has also led to collaborations with artists such as jazz trumpeter Chris Botti.
