Søndergård, Josefowicz and Ravel
Donor Appreciation WeekThu Sep 26 — Sat Sep 28, 2024
Orchestra Hall
Experience evocative and vivid writing from two masters of orchestration, where the lines between old and new are blurred. Maurice Ravel borrows from Franz Schubert and Thomas Adès turns to Johann Strauss, Jr., both in Viennese waltz style. Our soloist is Leila Josefowicz, who approaches new music with a sense of daring that is contagious.
A Few Things to Know

- These concerts are dedicated to our generous donors as we celebrate Donor Appreciation Week. Not a donor? You can still attend, but we encourage you to make a gift and support the music you love!
- A musical tale about a mind-boggling escape room? The Exterminating Angel is just that: a mysterious and macabre symphony inspired by Mexican filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s classic surrealist 1962 film of the same name.
- Composer and conductor Thomas Adès is a huge fan of the music of Maurice Ravel. It is not unusual today to find orchestras presenting programs like this one, which set Adès’ music alongside that of Ravel’s. Their musical styles are both powerfully unique and intrinsically linked.
- Leila Josefowicz was just 17 years old when she was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and 22 years old when she first performed with the Minnesota Orchestra. She has since received four Grammy nominations and was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize and MacArthur Fellowship awards.

The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård begins his second season as music director.
Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who in September 2024 begins his second season as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, is a highly regarded conductor in both the orchestral and opera spheres. He has earned a reputation for incisive interpretations of works by composers from his native Denmark, a great versatility in a broad range of standard and modern repertoire, and a collaborative approach with the musicians he leads. His 2024-25 season in Minnesota begins with two weeks of season opening concerts featuring Yunchan Lim and Leila Josefowicz. Other season highlights include performances of Mozart’s Requiem and Puccini’s Turandot, a January festival of music from Nordic countries and the return of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute.
Leila Josefowicz’s passionate advocacy of contemporary music for the violin is reflected in her diverse programs and enthusiasm for performing new works. A favorite of living composers, Josefowicz has premiered many concertos, including those by Colin Matthews, Luca Francesconi, John Adams and Esa-Pekka Salonen, all written specially for her.
