Nordic Tales and Folklore
Thu Jan 16 — Sat Jan 18, 2025
Orchestra Hall
Our Nordic adventures continue, this time anchored by selections from Grieg’s beloved Peer Gynt. You’ll also hear how Norway’s Ørjan Matre takes a collection of Grieg piano pieces and creates an otherworldly and welcoming soundscape. Fun Fact: Denmark’s Carl Nielsen was at the summer home of Grieg’s widow when he began to compose his only violin concerto.
A Few Things to Know
- In the Hall of the Mountain King is one of Grieg’s most recognizable pieces of music; its accelerating rhythms and foreboding, suspenseful energy has found its way into countless commercials, television shows, films and video game soundtracks.
- Ørjan Matre uses electronics, such as delay effects and amplification to transform his fellow Norwegian composer Grieg’s piano pieces into new sonic experiences, exploring how an orchestra might sound like a swarm of butterflies or to find out what happens when familiar Norwegian folk tunes move in slow motion.
- Winner of the 2019 Carl Nielsen Competition, violinist Johan Dalene’s previous performances of the Nielsen Violin Concerto have received rave reviews, including one in Norway’s Nordjskye Stiftstidende, whose writer called it “the finest performance I can remember…as if you are hearing the concerto here for the very first time.”

The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård begins his second season as music director.
Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who in September 2024 begins his second season as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, is a highly regarded conductor in both the orchestral and opera spheres. He has earned a reputation for incisive interpretations of works by composers from his native Denmark, a great versatility in a broad range of standard and modern repertoire, and a collaborative approach with the musicians he leads. His 2024-25 season in Minnesota begins with two weeks of season opening concerts featuring Yunchan Lim and Leila Josefowicz. Other season highlights include performances of Mozart’s Requiem and Puccini’s Turandot, a January festival of music from Nordic countries and the return of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute.
Winner of the 2019 prestigious Carl Nielsen Competition, Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene “is not just a virtuoso like many others, he is a voice. He has a tone, a presence” (Diapason). At the age of 23, he has performed with leading orchestras and in celebrated recital halls both at home and abroad. His ability to “make his Stradivarius sing like a master” (Le Monde), coupled with his refreshingly honest musicality and engagement with musicians and audiences alike, has won him countless admirers. In 2022, he was named Gramophone’s Young Artist of the Year.
