Søndergård, Mozart and Stravinsky
Fri Feb 28 — Sat Mar 1, 2025
Orchestra Hall
Igor Stravinsky was hesitant to compose a violin concerto, but once he got on board he didn’t hold back. Experience two sides of this multifaceted composer with his virtuosic concerto and his Bach-inspired Dumbarton Oaks. Plus, a Mozart symphony that asks the orchestra to play the last movement “as fast as possible.”
A Few Things to Know
- Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks was composed on commission from U.S. diplomat Robert Bliss and his wife Mildred in celebration of their 30th anniversary. The music draws inspiration from the Blisses’ stunning Washington D.C. estate and its many gardens. Today Dumbarton Oaks is a Harvard University research institute, library and expansive outdoor space.
- Violinist Isabelle Faust first picked up a violin at the age of 5 and grew up playing in a string quartet with her family members. When preparing a piece of music, her research process goes far beyond the notes on the page; she always tries to get closer to the source by researching historical documents, drafts of the score, and letters and journals from composers.
- When the University of Oxford awarded Haydn with an honorary doctorate degree, it also presented several concerts of his music in celebration of the occasion. Although his 92nd Symphony was written a few years earlier, it was received by the university as a capstone to Haydn’s career, and thus earned its nickname, the Oxford Symphony.
