Dvořák and Brahms

Orchestra Hall
This early summer chamber music event features Reinaldo Moya’s swirling new piece for three violins. At the center of the concert are Antonin Dvořáks Third String Quintet, inspired by Native American melodies and African American folk music he studied under the guidance of his student Harry Burleigh, and Johannes Brahms’ romantic and emotional String Sextet No. 2. Then, the Minnesota Orchestra's virtuosic wind musicians get their moment to shine as James Stephenson's Octet draws upon the characters of Igor Stravinsky's iconic Octet of one century ago.
A Few Things to Know
- Minnesota-based composer Reinaldo Moya wrote the violin trio in 2014 for his wife, violinist Francesca Anderegg, to perform with two of her students.
- Dvořák composed his String Quintet No. 3 while living in Spillville, Iowa, in 1893. It is often referred to as his American quintet and was composed around the same time as his very popular American String Quartet.
- “One thing I have always loved about Stravinsky’s writing,” says composer Stephenson, “is how he dovetails lines, handing from one instrument to the other, and how it is therefore the players’ responsibilities to make those seamless. It’s like handing a baton from one runner to the next in a relay race.”
