Nur-D's Pick: Get Out
If you don’t know Nur-D–respectfully–where have you been? Matt Allen, known by his stage name “Nur-D,” burst onto Minnesota’s hip-hop scene in 2018, and he’s been performing with the likes of Ludacris, Migos, Logic, Tyler, The Creator and The Wu Tang Clan ever since. He’s known for his celebratory anthems and high-energy shows that burst with joy, backed by a band that bounces alongside him; his music is emotive, whether he’s singing about feeling good (“Take My Picture”), crushing on someone new (“Crush”) or processing what was birthed from the Minneapolis uprisings in 2020 (Chicago Avenue).
In April 2024, he’s performing with different kind of all-star outfit: the Minnesota Orchestra. Working alongside arranger Andy Thompson (Cloud Cult, Dessa, Dan Wilson, Taylor Swift), Nur-D has something special cooking with us–this will be your chance to see him in a whole new setting.
But Matt is more than just “Your 7th Favorite Hip-Hop Person”–he’s also a bit of a film buff. And since we’ve begun collaborating, he’s become part of the Orchestra family–so we asked him to tell us about the concert he’s most excited for (besides his own!): Get Out.
“Jordan Peele’s Get Out was not only a completely revolutionary movie in its own right but it honestly changed the face of what an entire genre of movies could look like. It added words to feelings that have been around for decades, and honestly shook up culture in a way we had never really seen since maybe the original Candyman.
“I honestly think if we had to save 30 movies in the history of film from global devastation, Get Out should have a front row seat in that time capsule. Because unlike Freddy, Jason, or some doll with a kitchen knife, Get Out features a story with a villain so real it will follow you around the store for the rest of your life.
Getting the chance to hear the award-winning soundtrack of this movie performed by some of the most talented musicians in the world is something akin to seeing MJ play with the Bulls in ’97. ”
“And just when you think it can’t get any more fantastic, the score of this movie is one that also had the entire industry turning on their head. Getting the chance to hear the award-winning soundtrack of this movie performed by some of the most talented musicians in the world is something akin to seeing MJ play with the Bulls in ’97.
“This is without a doubt my pick, and I can’t stress enough how excited I am to be able to witness this truly haunting tale with the full power of the Orchestra behind it. I have no doubt that seeing this show with the Minnesota Orchestra alongside the iconic voices of The Steeles will be something that will pull anyone from the deepest depths of the Sunken Place and into a night of something forever memorable.”
