You will be dancing in your seat from the first note to the last as you listen to Domingo Hindoyan conduct the Minnesota Orchestra with guest trumpet soloist Pacho Flores. In Arturo Márquez’s new trumpet concerto, Flores delivers the many colors and flavors of Latin American dance bands while he performs on four different types of trumpets. These concerts conclude with Dvořák’s radiant Eighth Symphony, interwoven with a multitude of folksongs and delightful dance melodies.
A Few Things to Know
- Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen is a technical showstopper for violin and orchestra. In this concert, however, guest artist Pacho Flores performs the violin part on trumpet.
- In addition to his award-winning musical talents, Pacho Flores is the founding director of the Latin American Trumpet Academy in Venezuela.
- Domingo Hindoyan began his training in the Venezuelan El Sistema music-education program before traveling the world to study with conducting mentors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Andrew Davis and Daniel Barenboim.

Concierto de Otoño for Trumpet and Orchestra

Composed in 2018 specially for Pacho Flores, the Concierto de Otoño (Autumn Concerto) calls for four types of trumpet, merging Latin musical styles with the traditional fast-slow-fast concerto form, opening with an Afro-Cuban dance-infused dialogue between soloist and orchestra, continuing with a love song told in continuous variations, and concluding with a blazingly brilliant rondo.

Dvořák’s Eighth is full of luminous melodies and unexpected harmonic shifts. The second movement alludes to the funeral march of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, but lighter elements prevail in a whirlwind finale that is delightfully Czech.

The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. This past fall, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his tenure as music director.
Domingo Hindoyan, the chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, is one of today’s most exciting conductors. During his first season in Liverpool, Hindoyan opened his tenure with a critically acclaimed conducting debut at the BBC Proms, after which he embarked upon various recording projects, the first of which was released in September 2022.
Francisco “Pacho” Flores is a first-prize winner of the Maurice André International Competition, the world’s most important trumpet contest, as well as the first prize at the International Competition Philip Jones and first prize at the International Competition Citta di Porcia. Recently he was awarded with the Gold Medal by the Global Music Awards for ENTROPÍA, his last recording for Deutsche Grammophon with guitar player Jesús “Pingüino” González.

Friday night Ina-Yukka performs traditional folk music from South America and the "Nueva Canción" movement. Vladimir Garrido and Nia Biagetti bring together the sound of folkloric harmonies, traditional flutes and indigenous percussions. Ina-Yukka is accompanied by Miguel Gonzalez and Nicolas Muñoz.
