Tuning Into a Piano’s Personality
“We push these pianos to their limits,” says Concert Piano Technician Mika'ele Toia of Orchestra Hall’s three Model D Steinway pianos. “In a way, they’re kind of like racecars—we’re not dealing with mini-vans.” If the Orchestra’s Model D concert pianos are racecars, then Toia drives a Bugatti at work every day.
All three of our concert pianos have a unique personality, and Toia has a special bond with each. He works every day to ensure that the musicians who travel across the world to play with the Orchestra have access to instruments with “the largest color spectrum” imaginable. Go behind the scenes to learn more about the unique labor provided by technicians like Toia.
