Vänskä and Ross
Thu Oct 31 — Sat Nov 2, 2024
Orchestra Hall
While reading W.B. Yeats during the pandemic, Donghoon Shin felt an immediate connection between the poetry’s sense of despair and what was happening around him. Discover where that led him and hear the music of two composers writing near the mid-1900s: William Walton’s Cello Concerto and Sergei Prokofiev’s wartime Fifth Symphony, conceived of as “glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit.”
A Few Things to Know
- A hidden retreat space known as the Composers’ House in Ivanovo was designated for select Soviet composers such as Shostakovich, Glière and Khachaturian to continue working on their music during World War II; this is where Sergei Prokofiev composed his Fifth Symphony.
- Since becoming Principal Cello of the Minnesota Orchestra in 1991, Anthony Ross has been featured as soloist dozens of times, becoming a local celebrity in the Twin Cities music scene. This week’s concerts mark only the second time that Ross has taken on the exquisite Walton Cello Concerto with the Orchestra.
- The world premiere of Donghoon Shin’s Upon His Ghostly Solitude was conducted by Minnesota Orchestra Conductor Laureate Osmo Vänskä in April 2023 at a concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece is inspired by W.B. Yeats' emotionally complex poem, “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,” and its disconcerting relevance to worldwide events today.

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård begins his second season as music director.
Minnesota Orchestra Conductor Laureate Osmo Vänskä, whose 19-year tenure as the Orchestra’s music director concluded in 2022, is renowned internationally for his compelling interpretations of the standard, contemporary and Nordic repertoires. His multi-year project with the Orchestra to perform and record all ten Mahler symphonies concluded in November 2022 with the Third Symphony. Signature initiatives of his music director tenure included a Sibelius symphonies cycle that earned the Orchestra its first Grammy Award and major tours to Cuba, Europe and South Africa. As a guest conductor, he has received extraordinary praise for his work with many of the world’s leading orchestras.
Dynamic leader of the Minnesota Orchestra’s cello section since 1991, prize-winning cellist Anthony Ross has appeared as soloist many times with the Orchestra, performing all the standard cello concertos under Osmo Vänskä, Edo de Waart and Eiji Oue. Equally passionate about new music, he has given powerful performances of Michael Daugherty’s Tales of Hemingway, James MacMillan’s Cello Concerto, Paul Moravec’s Montserrat, and he and his wife, cellist Beth Rapier, have championed David Ott’s Concerto for Two Cellos since 1993. Prior to assuming the principal role in Minnesota, Ross performed for four years as principal cello of the Rochester Philharmonic under David Zinman.
Ross’ compelling interpretations have won wide acclaim from Moscow to Kalamazoo, and Dallas to Duluth. As concerto soloist, he has played with the Moscow State Orchestra, the Louisville Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the South Dakota Symphony and many other Midwest regional orchestras. Ross’ recordings include Leonard Bernstein’s Three Meditations from Mass, the George Lloyd Cello Concerto with the Albany Symphony, and the sonatas of Rachmaninoff and Elliott Carter.
