Musician's Favorite Passage: Steven Campbell Plays Wynton Marsalis' Concerto for Tubist and Orchestra
In concerts May 18 to 20, all eyes will be on an instrument typically found in the back row of the Orchestra: the tuba. Principal Tuba Steven Campbell will present Wynton Marsalis’ Concerto for Tubist and Orchestra—a piece that the American music icon composed in 2021. Influenced by a range of musical traditions from classical to boogaloo, the four movements of Marsalis’ kaleidoscopic concerto will showcase Campbell’s virtuosity. In anticipation of the performances, Campbell shared some of his favorite passages, including a finale that nods to bebop saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker and a multiphonic section in which he plays the tuba and sings simultaneously.
