Release: 2018
Repertoire: Symphony No. 6
“Vänskä’s remarkably unsentimental, scrupulously musical interpretation of the Sixth, powerfully executed by the players, should stand out even in an overcrowded CD marketplace. It could be a recording for the ages.”
Star Tribune, Terry Blain, November 15, 2016, following a live performance of the work at Orchestra Hall
The second recording in the Minnesota Orchestra’s Mahler Symphony cycle is now available. Recorded in November 2016 by BIS Records at Orchestra Hall, the album features Gustav Mahler’s massive Sixth, one of the composer’s darkest symphonies, famed for the dramatic hammer blows of fate in its final movement. Critic Michael Kennedy has called this symphony “Mahler’s most perfect reconciliation of form and matter.”
