Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection"

In 1935 the Minnesota Orchestra (then called the Minneapolis Symphony) and its third Music Director Eugene Ormandy made history with the first American recording of Mahler’s Second Symphony, a landmark release issued on 11 two-sided 78-rpm discs.

More than 80 years later, Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra now offer their interpretation of the all-embracing Resurrection Symphony; joining them are soprano Ruby Hughes, mezzo Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale. Recorded by BIS Records at Orchestra Hall in June 2017, the epic work, one of Mahler’s most popular, begins with a funeral march for a hero and culminates in an awe-inspiring vision of redemption and resurrection.
