American Riffs

Grades 3-6

Tue Mar 7 — Thu Mar 9, 2023

Orchestra Hall

Multi-talented Minnesota Orchestra trumpet player Charles Lazarus is skilled at showing the many connections between classical music and that great American tradition, jazz. Here students will encounter jazz-infused works such as Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing; Gershwin’s languid Summertime, from Porgy and Bess; and dynamic selections from Leonard Bernstein. What’s more, Lazarus, backed by a quartet of jazz stars, will perform a handful of dazzling trumpet solos.

Things to Know

  1. Prepare for the concert with a curriculum coming approximately six weeks before your trip to Orchestra Hall.
  2. Tickets can be reserved in advance with no payment due until a month before the concert.
  3. Does your school need financial assistance for an upcoming trip to a Young People’s Concert at Orchestra Hall? Request a bus subsidy.
