Right before he mustered up the nerve to compose his First Symphony, Brahms wrote a set of variations based on a simple chorale by Haydn. As his imagination took flight, he created a showpiece for orchestra. Also on the program, Jon Kimura Parker performs a beloved piano concerto that drew international attention to Norway’s young Edvard Grieg.

Program

  • BRAHMS

Variations on a Theme of Haydn

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Brahms’ Haydn Variations transforms a simple melody into a masterful showcase of elegance, invention and homage across eight variations and a finale overflowing with yet more ideas.

  • GRIEG

    Piano Concerto

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

This virtuosic keyboard showcase, written when its composer was only 25, reveals its heritage in evocations of traditional Norwegian song and dance, and contains a wealth of themes and dramatic gestures.

  • DVOŘÁK

    Symphony No. 8

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Dvořák’s Eighth is full of luminous melodies and unexpected harmonic shifts. The second movement alludes to the funeral march of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, but lighter elements prevail in a whirlwind finale that is delightfully Czech.
