Sing Democracy 250 will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 with a powerful message of hope for democracy through music that represents American history honestly, reflects America’s diversity, and calls all Americans to fulfill their obligations to America—to build together that more perfect union!
Two new choral works, “Redeem the Dream” by Brandon A. Boyd and “US” by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, form the core of this national choral music project designed to engage singers and citizens to reflect on America’s history and their responsibilities as citizens, and empower them to get involved in renewing American democracy.
Sing Democracy 250 originated in Minnesota with Together In Hope Project founders, Gary Aamodt and Celia Ellingson. It includes four Signature Concerts, anchored by the Together In Hope Choir, and the Sing Democracy 250—All America Program. Through the All America Program, nearly 200 choirs in 37 states will perform this same program in their communities throughout 2026.
The Minneapolis Signature Concert brings together singers throughout Minnesota. Participants include the Together In Hope Choir (Twin Cities), St. Scholastica Chamber Choir (Duluth), Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Choir (Moorhead), Choral Arts Ensemble Singers (Rochester), Honors Choirs of SE Minnesota, and the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, all under the direction of G. Phillip Shoultz, III.
Sing Democracy 250 reminds us all that the power of a democracy is in the voice of its people—and every voice matters. We, the people are the key.
Music has always been the voice of democracy: it unites, uplifts, and reminds us of a shared responsibility to one another and to our country. Together, we can keep that voice strong.
