Program

  • PUTS

    Heartland

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

This new work by Kevin Puts, director of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute since 2015, melds the musical device of canons—phased repetitions of a melody—with the harmonic flavor of Midwestern music.

  • WEBSTER

    Autumn Movement

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Benjamin Webster’s Autumn Movement explores the concept of change—personal, natural and societal. The bass has a prominent role throughout, serving as a musical “trunk” off of which musical ideas branch out.

  • ARANCIO

Bite Your Tongue for Orchestra and Tape

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Bite Your Tongue by Elise Arancio portrays the struggle of a silenced individual facing internal and external suppression. A pre-recorded track of broken syllables disrupts the orchestra’s material, symbolizing thoughts trying to break free.

  • INTERMISSION
  • KIM

    star / ghost / mouth / sea

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Soomin Kim’s star / ghost / mouth / sea is a set of four orchestral miniatures inspired by Franny Choi’s poetry collection Soft Science. The musical segments interpret Choi’s metaphors, exploring identity, technology, gender and violence through personal reflection.

  • FAULKENBERRY

    portrait through a prism

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

In portrait through a prism, Andrew Faulkenberry reflects on light passing through a prism—destroyed yet transformed into beauty. The piece meditates on emotions of powerlessness, fear, awe, reverence and transcendence.
