GUARANTORS’ WEEK

Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia

Thu Oct 13 — Sat Oct 15, 2022

Orchestra Hall

It has been more than two decades since Sir Donald Runnicles last conducted the Minnesota Orchestra. His return features a program woven together with great lyrical strength, opening with Carlos Simon’s emotional Elegy, a work in remembrance of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Soprano Jacquelyn Stucker makes her Minnesota Orchestra debut, singing the romantic melodies of Alban Berg’s Seven Early Songs. The second half of the concert features shimmering and sonorous music by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar.

These concerts are dedicated to the generous donors who have been at the heart of this Orchestra since its inception in 1903. Thank you, donors! Not yet a donor? Become one today! Give online or call 612-371-7129.

A Few Things To Know

  1. “[An Elegy: A Cry from the Grave] is an artistic reflection dedicated to those who have been killed wrongfully by an oppressive power; namely Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown," says composer Carlos Simon.
  2. Employing an unusual orchestration, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia calls for two separate string orchestras and a string quartet.
  3. Soprano Jacquelyn Stucker joins the Minnesota Orchestra for the first time ahead of a busy season, which includes appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic, as well as her debut in the role of Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Program

  • VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Derived from a psalm setting created by Henry VIII’s organist, Thomas Tallis, this work of both grandeur and intimacy calls for an unusual three-part ensemble—two string orchestras playing antiphonally, in addition to a solo quartet formed by the leaders of the string section.

  • BERG

    Seven Early Songs

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Late in his career, Alban Berg orchestrated seven piano-and-voice songs from his teenage years—pleasant music that looks back to the Romanticism of Richard Strauss rather than the experimentalist style founded by Berg’s teacher Arnold Schoenberg.

  • INTERMISSION
  • SIMON

An Elegy: A Cry from the Grave

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

Carlos Simon states that his Elegy, composed in 2015 and characterized by strong lyricism and lush harmonies, “is an artistic reflection dedicated to those who have been murdered wrongfully by an oppressive power; namely Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown.”

  • ELGAR

In the South (Alassio), Concert Overture

    1 min note

    One Minute Note

On his first trip to Italy, Edward Elgar also enjoyed a blissful stroll in the tiny republic of Andorra. A pastoral scene on the old Roman Way—a shepherd near the ancient ruins of a chapel—inspired this concert overture, whose images contrast the shimmering beauty of the hilly countryside with vast battles once waged by Roman armies.
