Heyward, Beethoven and Schumann
Fri May 30 — Sat May 31, 2025
Orchestra Hall
Two debut artists on this program you won’t want to miss: a pianist known for performing barefoot and a conductor who wears Chuck Taylors on the podium. Alice Sara Ott believes music has no timestamp and Jonathon Heyward wants to break down musical barriers. Their collaboration is sure to be memorable.
A Few Things to Know
- Conductor Jonathon Heyward and composer Hannah Kendall have worked together many times, with Heyward advocating for Kendall’s orchestral music worldwide. “With Hannah’s music,” Heyward explained in a Seattle Times interview, “you really understand the journey and the narrative behind everything.”
- Pianist Alice Sara Ott is famous for her explorative approach to music, blending styles, performing in unconventional spaces and collaborating with artists of all genres. Ott was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2019, and through her illness, she has found deeper vulnerability in performance and leads an open dialogue with the public about artists who live with health challenges.
- At 32 years old, Jonathon Heyward, who recently began his tenure as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, is currently the youngest music director of any major U.S. orchestra.

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his second season as music director.
Jonathon Heyward is forging a career as one of the most exciting conductors on the international scene. He currently serves as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, having made his debut with BSO in March 2022 in three performances that included the first-ever performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15. From summer 2024, Heyward will become Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director of Lincoln Center’s Summer Orchestra. This appointment follows a highly acclaimed Lincoln Center debut with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in summer 2022 as part of its Summer for the City festival.
One of classical music’s most creative minds, in the 2023-24 season Alice Sara Ott appears as artist in residence at London’s Southbank Centre and Paris’s Radio France; gives the worldwide premieres of a new piano concerto composed for her by Bryce Dessner; embarks upon an extensive Asia tour with her project Echoes Of Life; and releases two major new albums on Deutsche Grammophon, for whom she is an exclusive recording artist.
