Beethoven Symphony No. 6

Thu Apr 3 — Fri Apr 4, 2025

Orchestra Hall

~2 hours, including intermission

Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz felt a tiny invisible motor inside of her. “Thanks to this I run, not walk,” she said. That rings true in her compact Overture. Then hear how two boundless stars, Poland’s Marta Gardolińska and pianist Behzod Abduraimov, team up beautifully to uncover the soul of Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

A Few Things to Know

  1. Marta Gardolinska has spent her life combining two loves, music and athletics. She grew up participating in sports such as acrobatics, dance, swimming and running. Now she often describes conducting as a sport of its own and advocates that musicians must care for their bodies just as athletes do.
  2. As a teenager, pianist Behzod Abduraimov surprised everyone when he turned down educational opportunities at Juilliard and chose instead to travel to a small city in Missouri and study with Stanislav Ioudenitch, a fellow Uzbekistani pianist and Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner.
  3. Although they are two wildly different works with completely different sources of inspiration, Beethoven worked nearly simultaneously on his radical Fifth Symphony and Pastoral Sixth Symphony.
