A mysterious castle. A husband with secrets. Seven locked doors, each revealing something deeper and more unsettling than the last. This gripping premise launches one of the most compelling operas of the 20th century: Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle. Creative Director Adam Larsen’s lighting design and digital projections heighten the psychological drama and haunting atmosphere of this thrilling work. Get ready for an evening of powerful storytelling and vivid orchestral color as the drama unfolds, beginning with the Prelude from Wagner’s Lohengrin and the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, often described as of one the most profound expressions of longing, transcendence and unresolved desire.

The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to commissioning and performing the music of our time. In September 2025, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his third season as music director.
Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who in September 2025 began his third season as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, is a highly regarded conductor in both the orchestral and opera spheres. He has earned a reputation for incisive interpretations of works by composers from his native Denmark, a great versatility in a broad range of standard and modern repertoire, and a collaborative approach with the musicians he leads.
This season, renowned American mezzo Michelle DeYoung returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Herodias in the new production of Salome and appears at Carnegie Hall in a performance of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble. She also appears in concert with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
A “tall, majestic bass” with “impeccable technique” and “a palpable presence on stage,” Canadian bass-baritone Nathan Berg’s career has spanned a vast range of repertoire on the concert and operatic stage.
Christina Baldwin is a director, writer, adapter, producer, performer and frequent collaborator with the Minnesota Orchestra as a soloist, actor and recording artist. An advocate of new work, she develops new plays, musical theater and opera with the likes of the Ojai Playwrights Conference, The Playwrights’ Center, Nautilus Music-Theater and The Moving Company.
"I’ve always thought of Bluebeard’s Castle as a journey through hidden spaces within us—moments and memories that surface gradually as Judith opens each door. For this production, I’m building a layered visual environment above the Orchestra where images move through translucent surfaces and onto the architecture of the Hall itself.
Light, texture, and shadow accumulate over time, allowing those hidden spaces to slowly reveal themselves."
