Gershwin and Gatsby
Fri Aug 2, 2024
Orchestra Hall
Come experience a program with works written in and inspired by the Roaring Twenties! Conductor Lina Gonzalez-Granados will lead pianist Jackie Parker as he stuns in Gershwin’s Concerto in F, written hot off the heels of Rhapsody in Blue as the young composer sought to make his stamp in a genre steeped in centuries of tradition. Catfish Row Suite, an arrangement of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, will close out the program with its sweet evocations of summertime. Bring your dancing shoes to open the night with John Harbison’s Remembering Gatsby, a 1985 tribute to that quintessential novel and stay for a raucous visit to a roof-bound ox in Milhaud’s Le Boeuf su le toit (The Ox on the Roof).

Artists
The Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra, now in its second century, ranks among America’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in its home state and around the world; award-winning recordings, broadcasts and educational engagement programs; and a commitment to intentionally build concert programs to feature more works by composers of color, exploring music both contemporary and historic. In September 2024, Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård began his second season as music director.
Colombian-American Lina Gonzalez-Granados has distinguished herself nationally and internationally as a singularly-talented young conductor. Her powerful interpretations of the symphonic and operatic repertoire, as well as her dedication to highlighting new and unknown works by Latin-American composers, have earned her international recognition, most recently being named part of Bloomberg Línea’s 100 Influential Latinos of 2022.
Known for his passionate artistry and engaging stage presence, pianist Jon Kimura Parker has performed regularly at the Berlin Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, London’s South Bank, the Sydney Opera House and the Beijing Concert Hall. In 2019, he was appointed the Minnesota Orchestra’s first-ever Creative Partner for Summer at Orchestra Hall, a new role in which he is serving as a creative force behind the Orchestra’s summer festival and appearing each summer as a host, performer and personality. He is also artistic director of the Honens International Piano Competition and artistic advisor for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.
