The "Divine Love" of John Holiday's Voice
It takes only a few moments of listening to countertenor John Holiday’s voice to hear what makes it so special. Praised by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the finest countertenors of his generation,” Holiday made his Minnesota Orchestra during last year’s annual Juneteenth concert—and snagged the attention of Twin Cities music icons Jevetta and Jearlyn Steele in the process. After a post-concert meeting backstage between Holiday and the Steeles, an idea was hatched: to have Holiday sing a night of American songbook classics with the Orchestra, with Jevetta and Jearlyn joining Holiday as featured artists. That collaboration comes to life on August 8, as part of this year’s Summer at Orchestra Hall series, under the direction of returning guest conductor Jonathan Taylor Rush.
The first time I head John's voice, I was reassured heaven was a REAL place, a destination and a reflection of divine love. I have NEVER gasped at hearing a singer before...he took my breath away away and I'm better for it!”
