We spoke with Krin McMillen, music and entertainment manager at the Airport Foundation MSP, about the importance of the arts and including Minnesota Orchestra content at the airport.
Why are the arts and the screening area valuable to the airport and its travelers?
Airports are often associated with movement and logistics, but through Arts@MSP and the Airport Foundation MSP, the terminals become something more: a cultural front door to our region. The See18 film screening room creates a moment of pause within that movement. It invites travelers to slow down, reflect, and engage. Film has a unique power to immerse viewers in story and sound, and in an airport setting — where people from all over the world intersect— it becomes a bridge between place and people.
See18 is one element of a much broader, deeply integrated arts and culture program. Each year, Arts@MSP presents thousands of live performances throughout the terminals, from solo musicians to large ensembles and dance presentations. The program also features hundreds of visual works of art in our rotating exhibition spaces annually, new film content curated each year, and a growing collection of permanent installations.
Content played in See18 brings calm, color and humanity to the travel journey. These films offer a sense of arrival before passengers even leave the terminal and a meaningful last impression for those departing.
Why did the foundation choose to include the narrative stories from the Minnesota Orchestra?
As a classical musician myself who grew up in the Twin Cities, I’ve long experienced how deeply orchestral music is woven into the cultural fabric of Minnesota and what a profound impact it can have on human experience and connection. The Minnesota Orchestra represents that at the highest level—internationally celebrated, yet firmly rooted in local history and community.
By including the Orchestra’s narrative films in See18, the Foundation offers travelers more than a performance excerpt. These stories illuminate the people behind the music—the musicians, collaborators, conductors, and community partnerships that make this music so personal. For visitors from around the world stopping in See18, this may be their first glimpse into Minnesota’s rich artistic life. For those returning home, it’s a powerful reminder of the cultural excellence that thrives here.
