Traveling north to nearby Chisholm, Associate Conductor Courtney Lewis and our string quartet spent the evening rehearsing side by side with the string students of the Crescendo Youth Orchestra. "What makes a sound beautiful?" asked violinist Jonathan Magness. "It has to ring. Loosen up on the bow a little and let the sound go." Julie Stein, chair of the Steering Committee that organized Hibbing Common Chords activities, founded Crescendo Youth Orchestra in 2005, an organization which now comprises five ensembles for students from ages 7 to 18. "You can't put a value on what an experience like this means for these students," she says. "They will look back on it and think it was amazing."
