Classroom Connections

A glorious fall morning and a warm welcome from the community of Grand Rapids greeted the two chamber ensembles that kicked off the Orchestra’s week-long residency as part of the Common Chords project.

Students at Southwest Elementary and Murphy Elementary enjoyed presentations by members of the Orchestra’s string quartet Monday. Each grade level spent time with individual musicians before attending an all school assembly that featured a short performance by the ensemble.

At Forest Lake Elementary and Cohassett Elementary, students were treated to in-classroom sessions by the musicians of the Orchestra’s brass quintet. Students then gathered for an assembly, where the quintet performed a diverse program of music from Mouret to New Orleans Jazz.
