A nonstop day of Minnesota Orchestra activities concluded tonight at Brigid’s Pub, another lively downtown establishment, when four musicians transformed into jazzers and brought the house down. The Jazz Quartet consisted of trumpet Charles Lazarus, bass Dave Williamson, drums Peter Kogan and piano Tommy Barbarella.
Regulars at the Bemidji Brewing Tap Room sampled a little Puccini with their pints on Thursday when the Minnesota Orchestra Woodwind Quintet performed a musical happy hour for an overflow crowd at this downtown hot spot.
Musicians and staff participated in a traditional gathering at the American Indian Resource Center on Thursday evening, being invited to participate in an Ojibwe naming ceremony. Brass players offered their thanks for the warm welcome with a song: the Shaker melody “Simple Gifts.”
It felt like a sunny, mid-day trip to France when our String Quartet visited the Schoolcraft Learning Community, located on the loping grounds of the French Village of the Concordia Language Villages. All 190 students of this pioneering charter school—grades K-8—assembled for an afternoon performance featuring music of Ravel, Bartók and Brahms, and a chance for questions, including a perennial favorite from one youngster to the Quartet: “How old are you?”
