  • Claude Bolling was working professionally as a jazz pianist by age 14, and his greatest hit as a composer was this suite that blended jazz’s energy with the grace of the Baroque.
  • Ravel’s 1922 Sonata surprisingly has no keyboard part, as had been customary for chamber-music sonatas for two centuries.
  • Brahms’ Quintet in G uses melodies that he’d sketched for his never-to-be-completed Fifth Symphony.
