  • At the 1942 Metropolitan Opera premiere in New York City, Copland’s ballet about American cowboys earned choreographer Agnes de Mille 22 curtain calls.
  • Ginastera’s Estancia dates from the year after Copland’s ballet and tells a similar tale of cowboys, though set in Argentina. Estancia means ranch in Argentine Spanish.
  • 2016 is the 100th Anniversary of Ginastera’s birth.
  • The phenomenal young Chinese pianist, Zhang Zuo, makes her Orchestra Hall debut.
  • Zhang Zuo, who also goes by the name “Zee Zee,” was born in China and at five, her father moved the family to Germany. Not knowing anyone and not being able to speak the language, she was given a piano and threw herself at it with hours of daily practice.
