From Amber Frozen

A mainstage performance at Orchestra Hall featuring a string quartet of Minnesota Orchestra musicians, playing music from composer and DJ Mason Bates.

Bates’ music, which fuses innovative orchestral writing, imaginative narrative forms, the harmonies of jazz and the rhythms of techno, has been performed by major symphony orchestras throughout North America.

From Amber Frozen is as much influenced by today's electronica as by Indonesian gamelan. It starts with a lopsided groove of plucked out-of-tune notes and evolves from this rhythmic pointillism to more sustained lines, where a melody begins to emerge, and crystalline beats melt into a warmer lyricism. By the work's end, it has returned to its initial rhythmic space and ultimately loses pitch altogether.

Performance length is 15 minutes. This performance is free and does not require a ticket for entry. Presented by the Minnesota Orchestra as part of Northern Spark 2015, produced by Northern Lights.mn.

The Target Atrium at Orchestra Hall will be open all night from 9pm to 5:26am featuring the UCLA Game Lab's Game Bar—a fun place to explore games in a variety of formats, from installations and board games to virtual reality environments. Beverage service will be available for purchase featuring beer from Fulton Brewery.
