LIEBERSON
Neruda Songs
TCHAIKOVSKY
Symphony No. 6, Pathétique
An illuminating program of portraits and self-portraits, each tinged with love and loss.
Peter Lieberson wrote the shimmeringly beautiful Neruda Songs for his wife, mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson—who premiered them in 2005, then succumbed to cancer the following year. These love songs, a touching memorial to their marriage, also won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Composition. As for Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony, it was truly his final musical gift to the world, finished just weeks before his mysterious death.
