The Art of Russia: Energy and Elegance

PAULUS
"Veil of Tears," Interlude from To Be Certain of the Dawn

TCHAIKOVSKY
Selections from The Snow Maiden

SHOSTAKOVICH
Piano Concerto No. 2

PROKOFIEV
Piano Concerto No. 1

STRAVINSKY
Divertimento from The Fairy’s Kiss

Russian magic flows through this program! The phenomenal Kirill Gerstein takes the keyboard for two shining piano concertos, witty and expansive gems by Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Saluting our partnership with the Russian Museum of Art and its fall exhibit of folk art, we open and close with beautiful music inspired by Russian folk tales: Tchaikovsky’s incidental music for The Snow Maiden and the Divertimento from Stravinsky’s “Tchaikovsky” ballet, The Fairy’s Kiss—a tribute to Tchaikovsky himself, the composer Stravinsky loved the most.
