  • The centenary of Mandela, who was born on July 18, 1918, will be celebrated across South Africa and around the globe in 2018, to commemorate his legacy and to continue his work for equality and freedom.
  • A member of the African National Congress party in the 1940s, Mandela led peaceful protests and armed resistance against the apartheid regime in a racially divided South Africa. Imprisoned for 27 years, he helped negotiate apartheid’s end and in 1994 became the first black president of South Africa.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative, which is sponsored by the U.S. State Department and empowers emerging and accomplished leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. Join a panel of fellows hosted by the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs and Center for Integrative Leadership for a discussion exploring intersections between the arts, public policy, and the life and work of Nelson Mandela.
