Richard Marshall

Richard Marshall joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1984 and served as co-principal viola until 2019, when he decided to move into the core of the section. In 2003 he was featured with Orchestra colleagues in performances of Stephen Paulus’ String Quartet Concerto, Pieces of Enlightenment. He has performed at numerous Sommerfest chamber music concerts.

Marshall earned a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Trained first as a violinist, he studied with Itzhak Perlman and Dorothy DeLay. He has attended the Aspen Music Festival, the Aspen Center for Advanced Quartet Studies and the Banff Center of the Arts. He also performs at the Lakes Area Music Festival.

Marshall maintains a private teaching studio, is an adjunct viola professor at the University of Minnesota and has taught at the Madeline Island Music Camp. He also is a frequent coach for the Minnesota Youth Symphonies and GTCYS (Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies).
