Angela Ryu

First Violin

Named one of CBC’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30,” violinist Angela Ryu began her musical studies in New Denver, British Columbia, and spent her formative years in Calgary, Alberta, with William van der Sloot at the Mount Royal Conservatory. Ryu received her bachelor and master of music degrees from Rice University, Shepherd School of Music, studying with Paul Kantor. She joined the Minnesota Orchestra in September 2025.

Ryu is a first prize winner of several Canadian national competitions including the Shean Strings Competition, the Canadian Music Competition and the Canadian National Music Festival. In 2023, she was the winner of the Shepherd School Concerto Competition and performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the symphony under Hans Graf. She has enjoyed performing internationally, participating in competitions such as the Klein International Strings Competition and Washington International Competition for Strings. In addition, Ryu has appeared as soloist with the Calgary Civic Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Ryu served in concertmaster and principal positions at orchestras including the Shepherd School symphonies and the Tanglewood Music Center. She has also received fellowships from the Aspen Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music and Verbier Festival.
