With her “angelic” voice (Kölner Stadt Anzeiger) and “ethereal stage presence” (Sydney Morning Herald), Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg has become one of the most sought-after lyric artists of her generation.
A member of Deutsche Oper Berlin’s ensemble from 2013-19, her roles included Pamina in The Magic Flute, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Tytania in A Midsummer Nights’ Dream, Gilda in Rigoletto, Micaëla in Carmen, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Musetta in La Bohème, Contessa di Folleville in Il viaggio a Reims and Waldvogel and Woglinde in the Ring cycle conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
Appearing on some of the most prestigious stages worldwide, Stagg has enjoyed success as the title role in Cendrillon for the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Pamina in The Magic Flute and Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Susanna at the Komische Oper Berlin and Edinburgh International Festival; Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier and Eritea in Eliogabalo for the Opernhaus Zurich, Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier in two successive seasons at Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin; Leonore in Fidelio and L’Autre Voyage at the Opéra Comique, Mélisande for Opera de Dijon and Australia’s Victorian Opera (for which she received the Green Room Award for Best Female Lead in an Opera); Gilda, Blonde and Cordelia in Aribert Reimann’s Lear for the Hamburgische Staatsoper; Lady Magnesia (title role) and Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos for the Bayerische Staatsoper; Blonde for the Dutch National Opera; staged performances of Mozart’s Requiem at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence; and Morgana in Alcina and Marzelline in Fidelio for the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
A prized concerts performer, Stagg’s highlights of recent seasons include Shéhérazade with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Tugan Sokhiev; Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle; Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln with Wiener Symphoniker and Ingo Metzmacher; Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Vasily Petrenko; Das Paradies und die Peri with both Gürzenich Orchester Köln and François-Xavier Roth and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; Mozart’s Requiem with Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst; Brett Dean’s In This Brief Moment with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and Alan Gilbert; and a celebrated return to her native Australia for concerts with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Simone Young and as soloist in residence with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The 2024-25 season sees Stagg revisit important relationships with major orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tilson Thomas and Gürzenich Orchester Köln and Lorenzo Viotti in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2; Müncher Rundfunkorchester in Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater; and Tasmanian Symphony and Aalborg Symphony with Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder. Other concert highlights include her debut with Toronto Symphony and Jukka-Pekka Saraste in Mozart’s Requiem, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse and Tarmo Peltokoski, Orquesta y Coro de Radio Televisión Española and Freiburger Barockorchester.
Upcoming opera engagements of the coming season include Idomeneo on tour with Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Angelica in Orlando for the new production at the Théatre du Châtelet Paris, a revival of Lady Magnesia at the Bayerische Staatsoper as well as her role debut of Despina in Così fan tutte and a new opera Dark Side of the Moon by Unsuk Chin for the Hamburgische Staatsoper.
In recognition of her international achievements in the arts, the Mayor of Mildura awarded Stagg the Key to the City in 2023; the third recipient of this honor in the city’s history. Stagg is passionate about education and talent development and recently created a series of scholarships for young singers called the Siobhan Stagg Encouragement Awards. She sits on the Board of the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust.
