Mark S. Doss

bass-baritone

Grammy Award winner, Mark S. Doss has sung with the major orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto, while additionally performing 100 roles with more than 60 major opera companies around the world – including Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera, London’s Royal Opera Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Canadian Opera Company.

Prior to the pandemic, Mr. Doss ended the 2019 season with twelve performances of his 100th opera role, Rigoletto with Welsh National Opera in the UK, finally making his 10th appearance as the bass-baritone soloist with the International Music Foundation’s Do-it-Yourself Messiah in Chicago.  His limited 2020 appearances included an online recital for the Dallas Opera, a ZOOM Masterclass with the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, and a videotaped promotional segment for the 2020 Do-it-Yourself Messiah by the IMF.  Additionally, during the pandemic Mr. Doss presented 69 online Sunday segments of a program entitled “Heart & Soul” and 19 entitled, “Fachually Correct”.

During the last three seasons (prior to the pandemic) Mr. Doss performed his 99th opera role, Nabucco with Dorset Opera, did a revival of Nicholas Len’s Shell Shock in Paris for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice (available on DVD), a program of arias and songs with the Bozeman and Wyoming Symphonies, a series of recitals on the US East Coast (including New York City), he sang Daland in the Flying Dutchman with Dallas Opera, Scarpia in Tosca with Welsh National Opera, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticaana at Covent Garden, gave a masterclass at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, sang Balstorde in Peter Grimes with the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Sujskij in Dvoràk’s Dimitrij at Odessey Opera in Boston, Méphistophélès in Faust with Opera Oviedo in Spain, recorded the Title Role in Stephen Colantti’s The Selfish Giant (CD on the ECO Records label), sang Amonasro in Aida with the Teatro Regio in Turin, Cadmus in Henze’s The Bassarids with the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Jochanaan (one of his signature roles) in Salome as his debut with the Teatre Principal de Palma in Mallorca, Spain (winning the company’s most impressive male singer of the season award), and he performed the Title Role in Verdi’s Macbeth with Dorset Opera to great critical acclaim.

Highlights of previous seasons feature Mr. Doss as Germont in La Traviata with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Hyogo, Japan; Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the BHighlights of previous seasons feature Mr. Doss as Germont in La Traviata with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Hyogo, Japan; Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Bozeman Symphony, that same Requiem with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and Ottawa Choral Society, Jochanaan in Salome with the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, Brazil; the Colonial Soldier in Nicholas Lens’ World Premier of Shell Shock at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels (CD on the Universal label), and the bass-baritone soloist in IMF’s DIY Messiah in Chicago, appearing on ABC 7 and FOX TV, and commanding a feature article in The Chicago Sun Times.

Additional highlights include the Title Role in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at the Teatro Regio in Turin, double bill performances of Premysl (Sarka) and Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana) with the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the Dutchman at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Four Villains in The Tales of Hoffmann with the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Princeton, NJ, (CD through Naxos on the Westminster Choir College label), Simone in Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie with the Teatro Regio, Pizarro in Fidelio with the Dorset Opera, and the Title Role in Boito’s Mefistofele with Oper Frankfurt.

Upcoming engagements include his participation in a concert of Opera Highlights with the Dallas Opera, the bass-baritone soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Minnesota Orchestra, Créon and the Messenger in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Houston Symphony, and a return to La Fenice in Venice for Balstrode in Peter Grimes.

Mr. Doss has received the prestigious Entertainment Award from Planet Africa, which recognizes his achievements as an artist and for being a positive role model for youths in both Canada and the United States.  His masterclasses, fundraising for opera companies/orchestras, and his church volunteer work are among his many ways of trying to give back to the community.
