Osmo Vänskä Conducts Mahler's Tenth Symphony in Minnesota Orchestra Season Finale

The Minnesota Orchestra continues its Mahler Symphonies project with performances of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony on June 13, 14 and 15

Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra conclude the 2018-19 season with performances of Mahler’s Tenth and final symphony, one of his most personal compositions, in concerts at Orchestra Hall on June 13, 14 and 15. Though it was not complete at the time of his death, Mahler’s Tenth Symphony is performed in these concerts in the edition by British musicologist Deryck Cooke. The 80-minute symphony will be performed without intermission. These performances are part of an ongoing project to perform and record all ten of Mahler’s symphonies.

In sessions the week after these performances, Vänskä and the Orchestra will record Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 for a future release on the BIS Records label. Due for release later this year is a disc of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Titan, recorded in March 2018, which follows recently-released discs of the composer’s Second Symphony and the Sixth Symphony, as well as the Orchestra’s 2018 Grammy-nominated recording of the Fifth Symphony.

The concerts are performed at the Orchestra’s home venue of Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m.; Friday, June 14, at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, June 15, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $30 to $102. More information is available at minnesotaorchestra.org and by phone at 612-371-5656. For further purchasing details, refer to the information section at the conclusion of this press release.

Osmo Vänskä, conductor
Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä, the Minnesota Orchestra’s tenth music director, is renowned internationally for his compelling interpretations of the standard, contemporary and Nordic repertoires. He has led the Orchestra on five European tours, as well as an August 2018 visit to London’s BBC Proms, and on historic tours to Cuba in 2015 and South Africa in 2018. The Cuba tour was the first by an American orchestra since the thaw in Cuban-American diplomatic relations, while the five-city South Africa tour—the culmination of a Music for Mandela celebration of Nelson Mandela’s centennial—was the first-ever visit to the country by a professional U.S. orchestra. His recording projects with the Minnesota Orchestra have also met with great success and recognition, including the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Sibelius’ First and Fourth Symphonies on the BIS Records label. Mahler’s Tenth
Mahler’s Tenth follows the composer’s dictum that a symphony “must embrace everything”—from anguish to exuberance and serenity. Of note are a wide-ranging Adagio that builds to a nightmarish dissonance, a brief “Purgatorio” composed after Mahler discovered his wife Alma’s affair, and a tender finale that shows the composer’s undimmed love for Alma.
