Minnesota Orchestra Releases New Educational Webcast

The Minnesota Orchestra offers its second educational webcast, featuring a complete Young People’s Concert led by Assistant Conductor Akiko Fujimoto

The webcast will be available for viewing online beginning March 23, 2018

Today, the Minnesota Orchestra announced the release of its second educational webcast, which features a 45-minute video presentation of one of the ensemble’s Young People’s Concerts, titled Stories in Music. The concert, conducted by the Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor Akiko Fujimoto, hosted by Katherine Condon, and featuring several special guests, was recorded live in concert on March 8, 2018, and is available to view for free at minnesotaorchestra.org/yplive from Friday, March 23, through Sunday, May 6, 2018. The Orchestra’s first educational webcast, which was available in spring 2017, was viewed in 315 cities across 22 countries.

The new webcast features two of the Minnesota Orchestra’s own musicians—Principal Tuba Steven Campbell and piccolo player Roma Duncan—and music by Rimsky-Korsakov, William Grant Still and Michael Daugherty. The program also includes the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, reimagined as a sportscast, thanks to the hilarious antics of composer P.D.Q. Bach. It features Minnesota Public Radio’s Lynne Warfel and actor Stephen Yoakam as sportscasters and H. Adam Harris acting as an onstage referee.

“This concert webcast is a great way to get acquainted with the Minnesota Orchestra from the comfort of your home or from a classroom. This is an important part of our mission—to serve the community by providing access to great orchestral music in multiple ways,” said Director of Education and Community Engagement Jessica Leibfried. “If we can provide one more avenue for young people to access symphonic music, it could be the spark that creates the next great artist. That is truly exciting.”

Minnesota Orchestra Young People’s Concerts are daytime performances for school and homeschool groups looking for an outstanding arts experience that is both educational and engaging. Each Young People’s Concert focuses on a specific musical element, composer, time period or theme. Stories in Music is designed to help listeners investigate three important themes related to storytelling through music: that stories can be inspired by everyday things, that composers can make many choices to help tell their story, and that anyone can tell their own story by making music.
