Stanislaw Skrowaczewski Conducts Minnesota Orchestra in Bruckner's Eighth Symphony

Conductor Laureate Stanislaw Skrowaczewski leads Minnesota Orchestra in concerts October 14 and 15

On October 14 and 15, the Minnesota Orchestra welcomes Conductor Laureate Stanislaw Skrowaczewski back to the podium for performances of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony, in concerts that celebrate Skrowaczewski’s remarkable relationship with the Minnesota Orchestra—a tenure that spans more than 55 years. One of the world’s leading Bruckner interpreters, Skrowaczewski has held the Eighth Symphony as a personal favorite for many years, and conducted it on the historic occasion of his final subscription concert as Minnesota Orchestra music director in 1979. This 83-minute symphony represents the summit of the composer’s work—it begins in near silence, layering in lyrical and passionate themes that rise gradually to a monumental climax.

The concert is performed at the Orchestra’s home venue in downtown Minneapolis, Orchestra Hall, on Friday, October 14, at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, October 15, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $29 to $96.  Tickets are available online at and by phone at 612-371-5656.  For purchasing details, refer to the section at the conclusion of this press release.

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, conductor

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski commands an extraordinary level of respect in the international musical community as both a major conductor and a highly-regarded composer. He held the post of music director of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1960 to 1979, during which time he helped lead the effort to build Orchestra Hall, and since concluding his tenure has continued his affiliation with the Orchestra as conductor laureate, thereby serving on the Orchestra's artistic team for an extraordinary 56 years. He last led the Minnesota Orchestra in performances of works by Schumann and Bruckner in October 2015.

Skrowaczewski has conducted all the world’s top orchestras and continues to conduct major orchestras in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He is the honorary conductor laureate of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in Saarbrücken, and he conducts both ensembles each year. His 2016-17 season also features concerts with the Dallas Symphony, Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra and Warsaw Philharmonic. Celebrating his 93rd birthday in October, Skrowaczewski is the oldest working major conductor. He has received distinctions including the Bruckner Society of America’s Kilenyi Medal of Honor and the Gold Medal of the Mahler-Bruckner Society. In 2014, he received the Knight’s Cross of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland’s highest decorations, and in 2004 he received the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award, recognizing his decades of contributions to Minnesota arts and culture. His programming of contemporary music during his Minnesota Orchestra tenure was acknowledged with five ASCAP Awards.

Skrowaczewski is the subject of Seeking the Infinite: The Musical Life of Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, a biography by Frederick Harris, Jr., as well as a documentary film of the same name. For more information, visit
