Minnesota Orchestra Rings in 2016 with a Beethoven Marathon, Beginning with the First and Ninth Symphonies, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1

The Minnesota Orchestra launches a Beethoven Marathon, conducted by Music Director Osmo Vänskä

Concerts on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day include Beethoven’s First and Ninth Symphonies, the latter featuring four vocal soloists and the Minnesota Chorale

Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra celebrate the New Year with two concerts that begin the much-anticipated Beethoven Marathon. These concerts open with Beethoven’s First Symphony, and then soloists and the Minnesota Chorale join the Orchestra for Beethoven’s grand Ninth Symphony, in performances on December 31 and January 1. After the New Year’s Eve performance, audiences are invited to a post-concert party from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. with more entertainment, a countdown and champagne. The Beethoven Marathon continues with concerts through January 16, during which the Orchestra will perform all nine symphonies and all five piano concertos, featuring Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin at the keyboard.

A Joyous New Year: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony takes place on Thursday, December 31, at 8:30 p.m., and Friday, January 1, at 2 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $30 to $125. Performances take place at Orchestra Hall, the Minnesota Orchestra’s home in downtown Minneapolis. More information is available at and by phone at 612-371-5656. For further purchasing details, refer to the information section at the conclusion of this press release.

Beethoven Marathon
From December 31 to January 16, the Minnesota Orchestra and Music Director Osmo Vänskä take on the monumental feat of performing all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies and all five piano concertos over the span of eight performances. During the past decade, Vänskä and the Orchestra have recorded the complete set of Beethoven’s symphonies, and this concert marathon provides the opportunity to hear them all again live in Orchestra Hall. Joining the ensemble for all five piano concertos is the talented Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, whose recordings and performances of Beethoven and Mozart piano concertos with Vänskä and the Orchestra have met with great critical acclaim.

The Beethoven Marathon is supported by a generous gift from Marilyn C. and Glen D. Nelson.

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony Soloists
Three of four soloists make their debut with the Minnesota Orchestra in these performances. Tamara Wilson, soprano, is a regular guest artist with orchestras worldwide and recently performed her Metropolitan Opera debut singing the title role in Aida. Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo, has performed with the Boston Lyric Opera, Tucson Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony as well as with the Metropolitan and Des Moines Operas. Zach Borichevsky, tenor, has performed with Santa Fe and Cincinnati Operas and this season will debut with the English National Opera and Metropolitan Opera. Returning to perform with the Orchestra is bass-baritone Eric Owens, an esteemed interpreter of classic works and a champion of new music, whose 2015-16 season features collaborations with the New York Philharmonic as an artist in residence.

Osmo Vänskä, conductor
Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä, the Minnesota Orchestra’s tenth music director, is renowned internationally for his compelling interpretations of the standard, contemporary and Nordic repertoires. In addition to the Orchestra’s May 2015 tour to Cuba, he has led the Orchestra on four major European tours as well as regular tours to communities across Minnesota. His recording projects with the Minnesota Orchestra have also met with great success, including the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Sibelius’ First and Fourth Symphonies on the BIS Records label.
