Press Room: Press Releases

Vänskä conducts all-Sibelius concerts featuring violinist Henning Kraggerud, Nov 5 and 6

Music Director Osmo Vänskä leads the Minnesota Orchestra in concerts celebrating Sibelius’ 150th birthday; Henning Kraggerud solos in the Six Humoresques

On November 5 and 6, Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, world-renowned for their interpretations of Sibelius’ music, perform an all-Sibelius program in celebration of the composer’s 150th birthday. Presented in the order the music was written, the pieces on these concerts span the entire range of Sibelius’ compositional career. The program includes his popular Suite from Karelia and three impressionistic tone poems: Pohjola’s Daughter, The Oceanides and Tapiola. In addition, Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud will solo in the Six Humoresques, a charming set of miniatures-in-dialogue for violin and orchestra.

The concerts are performed at the Orchestra’s home venue in downtown Minneapolis, Orchestra Hall, on Thursday, November 5, at 11 a.m. and Friday, November 6, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $96. Tickets are available online at and by phone at 612-371-5656. For purchasing details, refer to the section at the conclusion of this press release.

A series of Sibelius miniatures

Sibelius’ Suite from Karelia pays tribute to a Finnish border region, showcasing the horn section in brilliant fanfares and the English horn in a heartfelt ballade. Pohjola’s Daughter, inspired by an ancient Finnish legend, calls to mind images of the vast Northland, while The Oceanides—the composer’s favorite—is a carefully-paced work in which rocking waves and splashes of color give life to the ocean’s mystical creatures. The Six Humoresques, which require incredible violin technique, are light in mood, strong in personality and full of imagination. Tapiola, Sibelius’ last completed work, and a high point among his symphonic poems, evokes the beauty, mystery and magic of the Scandinavian forest.
