CONDUCTOR CHANGE: Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto to Replace David Zinman in Minnesota Orchestra Concerts This Week

Programs remain unchanged, featuring Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture, Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, and Principal Cello Anthony Ross performing Bloch’s Schelomo

Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto will fill in for David Zinman on the Minnesota Orchestra podium this week; Zinman has had to withdraw from the week’s concerts due to health reasons. Prieto, who serves as music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México and the Louisiana Philharmonic, will conduct a “Symphony in 60” concert on Thursday, June 1, as well as classical concerts on Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3, that will feature Principal Cello Anthony Ross in Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo, among other works. The repertoire for all concerts remains as originally announced.

Celebrated for searing performances around the world, Mexico-native Carlos Miguel Prieto has led the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Cleveland, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver. He has served as music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México since 2007, and the following year was appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, a hand-picked orchestra which performs a two-month long series of summer programs in Mexico City. Prieto has also served as music director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra since 2005, a role in which he helped to lead the cultural renewal of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In 2015-16 he oversaw the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Louisiana Philharmonic, including the orchestra’s return to its restored home, the Orpheum Theater. Prieto is in growing demand in Europe, working with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Orchestre National de Lyon and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. A graduate of Princeton and Harvard universities, Prieto is making his Minnesota Orchestra debut with these performances.
