Dessa Performs with the Minnesota Orchestra, April 14 and 15

Twin Cities-based rapper-vocalist Dessa joins the Minnesota Orchestra for two performances, with orchestral arrangements by Andy Thompson

Minnesota Orchestra concerts on April 14 and 15 showcase the Twin Cities’ own multi-talented rapper-vocalist-essayist Dessa, a member of the indie hip-hop collective Doomtree. Internationally recognized for her beautiful alto voice and poetic style of communication, Dessa performs a new program of her own music, in collaboration with the Minnesota Orchestra and conducted by Sarah Hicks, principal conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall. With new orchestral arrangements by Andy Thompson, this concert will blur the boundaries between classical music and the hip-hop and rap genres.

“Designing this show is one of the most exciting challenges of my career,” said Dessa. “It’s a chance to be bold, to buck expectations, and to work with players who have mastered their crafts.” Dessa is joined onstage by vocalists Aby Wolf, Ashley DuBose, Cameron Kinghorn and Matthew Santos, bass player Sean McPherson and percussionist-arranger Joey Van Phillips.

The performance is held at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis on Friday, April 14, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 15, at 8 p.m., with tickets priced from $30 to $60. Tickets are available at minnesotaorchestra.org and by phone at 612-371-5656. For further purchasing details, refer to the information section at the conclusion of this press release.

Dessa
Dessa is a rapper, a singer and an essayist. She has performed at LollaPalooza, in a bombed-out hospital in Warsaw, at England's Glastonbury Festival and standing on a wooden chair in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. She tours as a solo artist and as a member of Doomtree, the innovative hip-hop collective.

On stage she's funny and ferocious, but also tender—sharing songs and stories about family, love and compulsion. Her live show includes rapid-fire rap songs, heartbreak ballads, catchy choruses, and some charismatic banter fueled by wit and whiskey. Dessa has published two literary collections, contributed a track to The Hamilton Mixtape (which reached #1 on the Billboard charts) and delivered the keynote address at Nobel Peace Prize Forum. She splits her time between Minneapolis and Manhattan, and is currently at work on her first book-length collection of personal essays.  More: doomtree.net

Andy Thompson, arranger
Andy Thompson is a composer, arranger, producer, mixer and multi-instrumentalist who’s made music with Belle and Sebastian, jeremy messersmith, Dan Wilson, BOY, Taylor Swift and Daniel Johnston. He's been nominated for a Grammy, once wrote an award-winning punk song—in French—for a Super Bowl ad, and has a degree in classical composition from the University of Michigan. With Dessa and the Minnesota Orchestra he combines two of his original musical loves: putting notes on paper and great pop music. More: andywho.com.

Aby Wolf, vocals and vocal director
Aby Wolf has attained broad recognition as one of the Midwest region's premier vocal talents through stirring solo performances and collaborations too numerous to mention. Wolf continues to turn heads with her unique brand of spacious electro pop (produced by Grant Cutler) both at home in the Twin Cities, and more recently, in cafes and clubs across Eastern Europe. Sarah Hicks, conductor
Sarah Hicks, the Minnesota Orchestra’s principal conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall, has led a broad range of programs since joining the Orchestra as assistant conductor in 2006. Away from Orchestra Hall, she has recently conducted the San Francisco Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and San Diego Symphony and debuted with the Dallas Symphony, Nashville Symphony and Toronto Symphony.
