Minnesota Orchestra's Holiday Season Begins with Trumpeter Charles Lazarus, Plus Family Concerts of "Peter and the Wolf"

The first concert of December features “Merry and Bright: A Big, Brassy Christmas with Charles Lazarus,” Dec. 2

The Minnesota Orchestra presents family concerts of “Peter and the Wolf”, led by Associate Conductor Roderick Cox, and featuring alumni actors from Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Dec. 3

On December 2, the Minnesota Orchestra’s holiday season opens with Merry and Bright, an evening of brilliant holiday music performed by Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter Charles Lazarus, along with vocalists, a rhythm section and a brass ensemble that includes several Orchestra musicians. The concert, which received great acclaim in its Orchestra Hall debut during the 2015 holiday season, will include timeless holiday classics in a variety of styles from groove to gospel. The next day, Associate Conductor Roderick Cox leads the Minnesota Orchestra and a troupe of actors who are alumni of Theatre de la Jeune Lune in two afternoon performances of Peter and the Wolf, featuring the beloved score by Prokofiev and other family-friendly classical selections.

The performance of Merry and Bright: A Big Brassy Christmas with Charles Lazarus takes place on Friday, December 2, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $60. The two concerts of Peter and the Wolf are held on Saturday, December 3, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with ticket prices at $12.

All performances take place at Orchestra Hall, the Minnesota Orchestra’s home in downtown Minneapolis.  More information is available at minnesotaorchestra.org and by phone at 612-371-5656.  For further purchasing details, refer to the information section at the conclusion of this press release.

Merry and Bright with Charles Lazarus

Charles Lazarus, a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2000 and current acting associate principal trumpet, has masterminded several original productions with the Orchestra, serving as soloist, composer and bandleader. For this performance, he is joined by his own seasoned rhythm section; esteemed vocal soloists Tonia Hughes and Bruce A. Henry; and the Lazarus Brass—including members of the Minnesota Orchestra brass section—to kick off the season with fresh takes on holiday classics. Lazarus first performed this inventive holiday show in 2014 at St. Joan of Arc Church and Wayzata Community Church, then in the larger venue of Orchestra Hall in 2015; it was enthusiastically received in all locations. Peter and the Wolf

Peter and the Wolf is a classic musical tale beloved by generations of children, featuring both music and narration by Sergei Prokofiev. Young listeners will recognize the personality of each character within the music: sprightly strings for the adventurous Peter, a bassoon for his stern Grandfather, and other instruments for the bird, duck, cat, hunters and the stealthy wolf. Brought to life by actors who are alumni of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, this program is the perfect introduction to the Orchestra for audience members of all ages. These one-hour concerts at Orchestra Hall are led by Roderick Cox, the Minnesota Orchestra’s associate conductor. More: minnesotaorchestra.org.
