Minnesota Orchestra Board of Directors Names Marilyn Carlson Nelson Chair Elect

Nelson to be elected Chair at December 2 annual meeting

The Minnesota Orchestra Board of Directors has unanimously ratified Life Director and Board Vice Chair Marilyn Carlson Nelson to serve as the organization’s Chair Elect at its most recent board meeting. Nelson, who is the former chairman and chief executive officer of global travel and hospitality company Carlson, will be elected Chair at the Orchestra’s December 2 Annual Meeting, succeeding Warren Mack in that role.

“We could not be more thrilled to have Marilyn Carlson Nelson on board as our incoming chair,” says Warren Mack, who will fulfill his two-year term as chair in December. “We know the Orchestra will flourish under her leadership.”

Nelson is known as a strong and beloved leader in Minnesota, where she is the current co-CEO of Carlson Holdings. She has appeared on Forbes magazine’s list as one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,” and was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News and World Report. Nelson currently serves on the boards of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy and the National Endowment for Democracy. Her engagement with the Minnesota Orchestra is long and deep. She chaired the Orchestra’s Symphony Ball in 1973 and later that year joined the board; she was named a Life Director in 2006; and in 2015, along with her husband Glen Nelson, generously funded the Orchestra’s historic tour to Cuba.

In accepting the Board’s nomination, Nelson reflected on the recent passing of her husband—and how she wanted to commit her time in the future. “When you encounter difficult times in life, it does make you revisit how you cherish those around you and also how you use your time. Part of you reflects that time is getting shorter and you think of all the things you could do with it, and there’s another part that says there’s not enough time left to give back,” she said. “Well, I’m proud to commit my time here. I can’t think of an organization that has done more than this one to make us realize that the arts do make us whole.”

“I look forward to working together with everyone,” she continued. “This organization is experiencing such positive momentum, and the best thing is how much everyone in the Orchestra—musicians, staff, board, volunteers and audiences—cares about each other.”

The Orchestra opened its 2016-17 concert season last week with Music Director Osmo Vänskä leading the ensemble and violinist Joshua Bell in performances of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

Minnesota Orchestra
Led by Music Director Osmo Vänskä, the Minnesota Orchestra is recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras. Founded in 1903, it performs nearly 160 concerts each year, with 300,000 attending, and reaches more than 85,000 music lovers annually through its education and engagement programs. It is heard widely through award-winning recordings—including a Sibelius album that won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance—as well as via an acclaimed series of weekly radio broadcasts produced by Minnesota Public Radio. Most recently, Vänskä led the Orchestra on an acclaimed four-country European Tour in August 2016 and in September performed a wildly-popular Prince and Beethoven tribute halftime show at the Minnesota Vikings Home Opener game in U.S. Bank Stadium. The Orchestra makes its home at the acoustically brilliant Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis. For more information: minnesotaorchestra.org.
