Minnesota Orchestra Announces New Initiative Encouraging Patrons to Bike to Orchestra Hall

“Bike to Orchestra Hall” program offers a 50% discount coupon to patrons who ride their bikes to concerts

The Minnesota Orchestra introduces “Bike to Orchestra Hall,” a new program designed to build relationships between the Twin Cities’ biking community and the Orchestra and to encourage healthy and low-cost modes of transportation. Beginning in Sommerfest 2016, audience members who ride their bikes to concerts are invited to show their helmets or bike gear at the Orchestra Hall Box Office to receive a card with a promotional offer for a 50% discount to select concerts. The “Bike to Orchestra Hall” initiative begins on July 8, 2016 and continues at all concerts through the summer and into the 2016-17 regular season. Concerts eligible for the discount will be added regularly. Some restrictions apply.

“This is a fabulous way to get exercise and hear great music,” Ellen Dinwiddie Smith, a horn player in the Orchestra, says of the initiative. Smith rides her bike daily and has commuted to and from rehearsal many times in her career. “Minnesota is a very active state and there are many bike riders in the Orchestra. As musicians we need the cardio for our lung power and the constant motion combats the long hours we spend sitting while practicing.” For those concerned about attending a concert in bike gear, Smith adds that “people should feel comfortable to come as they are…whether biking, walking or strolling around town. Most importantly: enjoy the music and have a great time!”

As part of the program, additional bike racks will be installed around Orchestra Hall this summer and biking information, including navigation, bike parking and safety tips, is now available on the Orchestra’s website.
